Any car accident is a scary experience; a hit and run accident is an additional shock that can leave you wondering what to do next. Knowing what steps to take after a hit and run can alleviate feelings of helplessness and frustration. More importantly, it can help you locate the person responsible and hold them accountable for your injuries.
Gather as Much Information as Possible
After an accident, Colorado law requires both drivers to exchange insurance information. Because this exchange does not happen in a hit and run situation, you must look closely (and usually quickly) for any other identifying information. Pay attention to the make and model of the other driver’s vehicle, including any identifying marks, such as dents, scratches, bumper stickers, or broken windows. If you have a cell phone with a camera, try to take a picture of the other vehicle, including its license plate. Even a partial plate number is better than nothing. Also try to memorize details about the other driver’s physical description.
Obtain Information from Witnesses
If other motorists or pedestrians observed the crash, gather their names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Ask any witnesses to give a statement to the police as soon as possible after the accident.
Contact the Police
By contacting the police after a hit and run accident, you are not only documenting the incident, you are helping law enforcement catch a criminal. Under Colorado law, drivers who leave the scene of an accident can be prosecuted under a felony charge depending on the circumstances of the case. Furthermore, Colorado in 2014 enacted a law establishing an alert system to help communities catch hit and run drivers. Known as “Medina Alerts”, the alerts were created in memory of a 21-year-old valet who was killed by a hit and run driver. Since a hit and run alert system was put in place in the cities of Denver and Aurora two years ago, the alerts have resulted in the apprehension of 13 out of 17 hit and run drivers.
