Carbon Monoxide Deaths and Injuries
Carbon monoxide is a silent
killer. It kills and injures thousands of people each
year. Because it is a colorless, odorless gas, it cannot
be detected through our five senses. Carbon monoxide is
produced by gas burning appliances such as furnaces, hot
water boilers, stoves, and gas dryers. It results from
incomplete combustion (inadequate oxygen) and inadequate
ventilation. Persons using charcoal grills, gas-fired
generators and motor boats may be at risk for carbon
monoxide poisoning even when outside if adequate
ventilation is not available. Persons running autos in
inadequately ventilated spaces or in high snow have been
injured or died as a result of carbon monoxide
poisoning.
The symptoms of carbon
monoxide poisoning include headache, nausea, vomiting,
dizziness – all symptoms of other ailments, including
the flu. Most emergency rooms do not test for, nor do
they suspect or diagnose carbon monoxide poisoning
unless an individual is brought into the ER unconscious,
and even then, the diagnosis may be missed. Carbon
monoxide attaches to red blood cells and displaces
oxygen – so our bodies do not get adequate oxygen.
However, carbon monoxide poisoning cannot be diagnosed
by a simple blood oxygen test. Special blood tests
measuring carboxyhemoglobin can show carbon monoxide
poisoning if the tests are taken shortly after the
carbon monoxide exposure. A few hospitals have special
equipment that can immediately test for carbon monoxide
levels in the blood.
If you suspect you have been
exposed to excessive levels of carbon monoxide, you
should (1) get away from the source of the poisoning
immediately and (2) contact your local gas company or
the fire department. Those agencies can accurately
measure the carbon monoxide that may have built up in
your home.
Although many people who
have been exposed to carbon monoxide recover without
permanent health effects, some victims are not so
fortunate. Because carbon monoxide prevents cells from
getting adequate oxygen, carbon monoxide poisoning
affects those parts of our body that need the most
oxygen – the brain and the heart. Symptoms of brain
injury due to carbon monoxide poisoning include loss of
short term memory, inability to track when reading and
difficulty with mental tasks that previously posed no
problem. Carbon monoxide poisoning can adversely affect
hearing and balance and may result in seizures.
Carbon monoxide poisoning
injures countless numbers of unsuspecting individuals
each year, especially in the winter. Families can
protect themselves from carbon monoxide poisoning by
installing carbon monoxide detectors on every level of
their homes and by making sure that all the appliances
in their home are operating properly with adequate
ventilation.
